Claudio Cavicchi is a renowned Italian pipe maker based in Bologna, known for his exceptional briar pipes. Cavicchi has a fascinating background - he was originally a farmer and is also a multiple award-winning pipe smoker, holding the Guinness World Record for the longest pipe smoke at over 3 hours!
The Cavicchi Pipemaking Story
Cavicchi first started making pipes in 1974 out of impatience while waiting over a year for a commissioned pipe. He decided to make it himself using briar and acrylic, and the result was so impressive he continued pipemaking from then on. By the 1980s he transitioned to full time pipe making, establishing his reputation over the years for superb quality and craftsmanship.
What Makes Cavicchi Pipes Special
Here are some key things that set Cavicchi pipes apart:
- Briar Selection: Cavicchi personally hand-selects premium briar from the Calabria and Liguria regions of Italy and cures them slowly over 2-3 years. His briar is widely regarded to have some of the most stunning grains in the world.
- Acrylic Stems: Every Cavicchi pipe uses hand-made acrylic stems for a precise fit. The acrylic is polished to a smooth, comfortable finish.
- Classic Italian Shapes: Cavicchi excels at classic Italian shapes like the Dublin, Apple, Billiard, and more. The shapes are elegant with excellent engineering and drafting.
- Gorgeous Grain: A hallmark of Cavicchi pipes is the exceptional grain patterns, even on smooth pipes. He is able to "read the briar" and select blocks that will yield optimum grain orientation.
- Finishes: Most Cavicchi pipes feature smooth or sandblasted finishes, but he also does some light rustication. The smooth pipes are graded from C to CCCCC indicating quality of grain.
